| Big Brother 5 Recap: JASE SNAGS PoV, MARVIN PUTS KAREN ON THE BLOCK
In a riveting competition called Snag the Veto, Jase emerges victorious over a hard-working Lori to grab the Power of Veto. As in the previous Veto competition, not all HouseGuests compete. It's just the HOH, the two nominees and the partners of their choosing. Marvin chooses Drew, "...the pretty boy from the Buckeye state." Lori selects Karen, and Holly chooses Jase. Holly showed prescience bordering on clairvoyance, saying, "I looked at Jase. He's a fireman. He's probably got to deal with a lot of hoses and water." As a result of Jase's win, HOH Marvin puts Karen up for eviction in place of Holly.
The competition involves untangling a 100 foot rope and threading it through a series of walls. Whoever gets the rope through the walls and then places their Veto ring on the post at the end wins. The HouseGuests are running neck and neck in the beginning, but over time Jase pulls ahead. Karen thought she might have had it for a moment, saying, "I felt pretty good until I ran into that arrogant SOB Jase. He encompasses you like a disease."
Jase's "I became the rope" strategy helps him to win the Power of Veto. His victory throws the fledging Lori/Karen/Will alliance into disarray as he uses his power to remove Holly from the chopping block. He then yields the floor to Marvin, who as HOH has to put up yet another HouseGuest. This time Marvin chooses Karen.
OPERATION SECURITY BLANKET
Prior to the Power of Veto competition, the Four Horsemen and the girls debate the vote. Diane has it in for Holly and really wants to get her out. The Four Horsemen convene and tell Michael it's his job to get Nakomis in line with their voting plans. But Michael's machinations backfire as Nakomis is not down with being told what to do with her vote. "I do not fly with that at all. At all," she says.
Will and Karen hatch a top-secret plan. As Karen plays domestic goddess, spritzing a counter-top, she and Will discuss how to keep Lori in the house. The plan is to lull the Four Horsemen into a false sense of security by saying they will definitely get on board and unanimously vote Lori out, then turn the tables, ousting Holly and keeping Lori around. Will is thrilled, crowing, "We're beating them at their own game."
Things get hairy for a moment as Lori decides that she is ready to leave, and wants to go home. A tearful Karen says that cannot be so, and Operation Security Blanket remains committed to its mission, even if the person they're saving says she wants to go.
DREW, DREW HE'S OUR MAN--IF HE CAN'T DO IT NOBODY CAN SCOTT, SCOTT--HE'S THE OPPOSITE OF HOT
While the house may be divided on some things, it isn't when it comes to Drew and Scott. Where Drew is unanimously loved, even revered, Scott is universally reviled. Diane clearly has the hots for Drew, mooning, "Drew is sent from heaven. He's definitely beautiful." Will adds to the Drew love-fest saying, "We have the number one man in America. I feel like a diabetic in an ice-cream parlor."
Scott on the other hand is on the receiving end of some of the harsher comments to be mouthed by the HouseGuests. He and Diane have a particularly contentious relationship. When describing his entrance into a room, she says, "...in walks meathead." Scott eggs on Diane's animosity by first saying, "Diane, you got about as much power as Saddam Hussein had over his own people, which is nothing." He then takes it further by calling Diane trailer trash, reducing her to tears and turning some of the HouseGuests against him.
Scott doesn't curry any favor as he discusses his reasoning for posing for Playgirl. He says, "My ass percentage went up like this," making a gesture that would put the hockey stick curve to shame. His vanity seems to know no bounds, as he turns and looks in the mirror, saying, "You sexy bitch." And it's not just his vanity, but he is intent on jumping on, punching or running into nearly every inanimate object he can find. One moment of inspired Scott-ness sees him sliding off a treadmill on purpose and crashing into a couple of well-placed plastic containers.
Each of the HouseGuests has their own particular take on Scott, and few of them are positive. Will says he thinks Scott is like a caged gorilla, adding for good measure, "He's proven himself to be a numb-nut." Marvin, who seemingly gets along with most of the HouseGuests, lends a bit of Southern-fried wisdom to the subject: "Scott is one knife short of a full drawer."
NAKOMIS PLAYS THE GOTH CARD AND GETS A MOHAWK
Nakomis begins to reveal what her game is; laying low, getting friendly and, as she puts it, "'Playing the Goth Kid' card." She also reveals that she's a little disappointed by the behavior of her recently discovered half-brother. "If I had no clue that Cowboy was my brother, I don't think we could even chill in the same room. I can't stand to be around him. My family and I are proud people. We don't kiss butt. I wouldn't align with him even if I had known him for three years."
Taking a break from changing the color of her hair, Nakomis goes for a change in length and design and gets a Mohawk. She makes the first cut, and Lori cuts the bulk of it while everybody cheers her on. Upon completion, a glowing Jennifer announces she is thrilled with her new look.
Who will go, Lori or Karen? Will Jase's saving Holly make him an even bigger target? And will Drew succumb to the feminine wiles of Diane? | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| Big Brother 5 Recap: MARVIN HAS SPOKEN: LORI & HOLLY ON THE BLOCK
Nomination day arrives, and Head of Household Marvin begins his deliberations. After a quick consultation with three of the Four Horsemen (not Michael), and a sit-down with Adria, Marvin calls the Nomination Ceremony to order. He makes a brief speech about how his nominations reflect the strength of the players he has nominated and begins the ceremony by removing Diane's key.
In rapid succession, we go around the table from Diane to Will to Jennifer (Nakomis) to Michael to Drew to Karen to Jase to Adria and finally to Scott, leaving Lori and Holly out in the cold. Marvin then explains how he came to his decision. To Lori he says, "Lori, I nominate you since you're the strongest player in the game." Then to Holly Marvin says, "I thought Jase was one of the strongest players in the game, and to exert the type of influence you have on him showed me something." In summation, Marvin adds, "This is a debt of respect to you as strong players, not a personal indictment." Will perhaps expresses the mood of the post-nomination ceremony best: "It does feel like a funeral."
FOOD COMPETITION: CATAPOULTRY
As food supplies dwindle, nerves begin to fray. Referring to a piece of tuna that has been in the refrigerator too long, Marvin observes, "That fish smelled stronger than pee in a nursing home." But HouseGuests need not fear, for the Food Competition is here! Marvin calls the group to attention and hands them all colored bandanas. Jase, in a moment of excitement, declares, "Bandanas, the Four Horsemen, it's a message from God."
The HouseGuests emerge from the BIG BROTHER House to find the backyard turned into a barnyard. Feeling at home for the first time in weeks, Michael runs and jumps onto a hay bale, kicking his feet in the air. Marvin then explains the game. He points to two giant slingshots or catapults and then to a pile of rubber chickens. The goal of the game is to fire the rubber chickens into as many food baskets as possible in a five-minute span. Sound easy? Think again: of course, there is a catch. If any of the chickens lands in a "Bad Egg" basket, then all the food and drink the HouseGuests have secured is wiped out.
The game begins with a bang as Lori hits the Beer basket right away, and Marvin says, "You redeemed yourself there." As chickens fly, foodstuffs accumulate. One chicken lands in the Fruit and Vegetables basket, another in the Seafood. Some HouseGuests are more successful than others. Michael, for one, admits, "I don't shoot chickens for a living." The HouseGuests are looking forward to a week of getting fat and kicking back, when at the 3:45 mark disaster strikes, Will hits the Bad Egg basket, and all the food drops to the ground.
Marvin tries to rally the troops, and they manage to land a few chickens in the baskets: some Milk and Butter, a little Bacon and Sausage and some Seafood. Will, already feeling terrible, is not helped by Marvin warning, "You will be drawn and quartered."
WILL TAKES A POWDER, BALLAD OF HOLLY & JASE, MEET SKIPPER AND GILLIGAN
Devastated by firing the Bad Egg, Will does not feel that anybody is very supportive of him. He admits that he hasn't hated anybody in a long time and directs the bulk of his ire at Jase and Scott. Of the Four Horsemen he says, "The Neanderthals are making derogatory comments. They're not intelligent people. There's not a support system." He is tearful as he discusses his shortcomings in the game and not happy with the dynamic in the house.
Jase and Holly's romance heats up as we watch them bathing together, Jase shaving Holly's legs. Their relationship threatens the Four Horsemen alliance, and in a moment of candor Scott and Michael admit that they feel Jase's head is not in the game. But they need not worry overmuch, as tension begins to mount between Jase and Holly when Jase boasts of bedding attractive older women.
Holly corners Diane in the bathroom, bending her ear about how Jase is being a jerk. Diane then replies that from Day 1, Jase said he was going to play Holly. When an unnerved Holly confronts Jase with this information, he turns it around, saying, "Well, maybe you're playing me."
The situation comes to a head as Jase, perhaps on purpose, perhaps by accident, calls Lori out in front of everybody, saying that Lori, not Diane, has been whispering in Holly's ear. Lori denies it, storming into the house to confront Holly, who replies, " I never said that to Jase." In a final slight to Jase, Holly makes him a sandwich and spells out on the plate, "Liar. You suck."
Continuing the strong metrosexual theme of Big Brother 5, Michael consents to have his legs shaved in a racing stripe pattern by Scott and to a makeover in general. Everybody in the House picks up on the strange vibe between Scott and Michael. Karen puts it best: "Scott and Michael are like Skipper and Gilligan."
Adria continues to pull the wool over everybody's eyes, but how much longer can that last? Will Jase and Holly make up or break up? Who will win the Power of Veto, and will they save Lori, or will it be Holly? Find out this Tuesday on the hottest show of the summer: BIG BROTHER 5! | comments: Leave a comment |
| Big Brother 5 Recap: THE DON GETS HIS WALKING PAPERS: MIKE EVICTED,MARVIN NEW HOH
By a unanimous vote, Mike, the 41-year old painter from Michigan, is the first evicted from the BIG BROTHER household. Despite his best efforts to plant seeds of doubt about the power of the Scott and Jase alliance, he is unable to change anyone's opinion and gets evicted live on national TV. Mike's reaction to the unanimous ousting? "Somebody could have thrown me one vote."
We get to see the game in play, for as Mike exits the house, saved nominee Nakomis is hugged warmly by the Four Horsemen. Mike then sits down with host Julie Chen and explains that he was ousted because he came to play and Scott and Jase recognized that. He also explains why, despite being disappointed, he's okay with it, "My heart wasn't in it. You can't spend the money from the Psych Ward."
Next Mike watches the Diary Room goodbyes, all of which are kind and warm, except Scott's. Scott says to camera, "You were absolutely right, Mike. I am the strongest player in the game."
MAJORITY RULES: MARVIN NEW HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD
In a move that is sure to shake up an already shaken-up house, Marvin, the 36-year old mortician, wins the Head of Household position. How? By outlasting his fellow HouseGuests in a little game called Majority Rules. The gist of the game is that Julie will ask a question of all the HouseGuests except Jase (the outgoing HoH is not eligible to compete). They must answer the question not with what they think the answer will be, but with what they think the majority of the house believes to be the answer.
Over half the HouseGuests are swiftly eliminated, but then things stalemate as those left standing all answer correctly. Julie announces a tie-breaker question relating to the first Food Competition. Marvin gets the answer right and becomes new Head of Household.
THE STORY OF MICHAEL AND JENNIFER
Emotions outside the BIG BROTHER House are running high as we meet Michael's biological mother and father. Julie informs us that even the parents didn't know about the connection between Jennifer and Michael until just five days before BIG BROTHER 5 began. We travel to Tennessee to meet Guy Dedmon, father to both Michael and Jennifer and learn just how much it means to him to now know of the existence of a son. Showing a gift for understatement, Guy's comment on the whole situation is, "That's a twist."
Guy then expresses his heartfelt thanks: "I just want to tell Big Brother thank you. I have always wanted a son. I didn't realize I had one and now I do." Michael's mother, Christine Lee, sheds tears of joy as she watches her son discover his half-sister in the House.
In a heartwarming segment, Guy highlights the likenesses between his offspring, noting "There are similarities between Michael and Jennifer. They're both energetic. They're both positive people."
HOLY TWIN SWITCHEROO!
In yet another BIG BROTHER 5 twist, Adria reveals that she has been swapping in and out of the house with her twin sister, Natalie. We meet Natalie, who is physically identical to Adria save for a few tiny facial characteristics--the size of a mole, a small facial scar--and learn about their dynamic deed of deception. Natalie and Adria explain how they have only 15 minutes to perform the switch, and then we get to see them switching in and out of the House at various times of day. When Julie asks how they do it, they answer, "Different disguises, lots of hats and glasses."
Highlighting how stressful the situation can be, we see live how the twins make the switch. Prior to this show, the twins were given 15 minutes to download information. Then in tonight's live show, they have only one minute before Adria must return to the game while Natalie goes into sequestered seclusion.
If they make it through the first five weeks without getting kicked out, both twins enter the game. Will they last, or will they be discovered? What will Marvin do with his newfound power? How will he react to the Spy Screen in the HOH bedroom?

| Big Brother 5 Recap: "I CHOOSE NOT TO": SCOTT WINS PoV, DOESN'T USE IT
The noose continues to tighten around Mike's neck as Scott wins the Power of the Veto in the "Flaringo" ring toss game. After some deliberation, Scott elects not to use the PoV. This decision leaves both Jennifer, a.k.a. Nakomis, and Mike as the HouseGuests still up on the block.
Jase, relishing his Head of Household power, calls the Power of Veto meeting and explains how, in a twist from years previous, not every HouseGuest will be competing. Rather it is the HOH, the two nominees and partners of their choosing who will compete. This immediately ramps up the intensity, as it is clear that each choice will have ramifications on the participants' success or failure in the game. Jase loves the game. His parting exhortation? "It's going to be a shoot-out at the Big Brother corral."
NOBODY WANTS TO BE LIKE MIKE
An on-the-ropes Mike casts about trying to form alliances and help open people up to the power of the Scott-Jase alliance. It's difficult for him to get anybody's ear. Drew says, "You can't even talk to Mike." At no time is this more evident than when Mike goes outside and pulls up a chair to the whole group, and slowly over time, every single person gets up and leaves. Only Diane stays behind.
Mike's frustration at being singled out begins to show as he first lays into Scott, in front of Marvin, saying to him, "Any fool would know you're working together." Later he takes Jase head-on, saying that he knows that he and Scott have an alliance. Jase replies, "I swear on my mother's grave we're not a team." Then, as Mike won't let the subject drop, Jase says, "Quit following me, I'm walking away."
Mike, having grasped what the new "partner" arrangement in the Veto competition means, lets Holly know he'll be choosing her because that will leave him with one less person to compete against. He breaks it down for her, saying, "All you have to do is lose. Can you do that?" She replies, "Lose?" Mike smiles widely and gives her a big you-go-girl gesture.
PINK FLAMINGO + RING TOSS = FLARINGO
Continuing to show his flare for the dramatic, Jase dresses up in a Zorro mask to announce the Power of Veto Competition. Partners are chosen. Mike chooses Holly, Nakomis chooses Drew and Jase chooses Scott.
As they all adjourn to the backyard they find that it has been turned into a miniature pink flamingo theme park dotted with small islands. Essentially, each of the pink flamingos is in one of four zones, and the goal is to toss a ring around each flamingo. In order to stay in the game, a player must toss a ring into a zone of either equal or greater value than the previous player. If a player tosses the ring into one of greater value, the previous player is eliminated.
Drew goes first and manages only to get a ring in Zone 1. Mike goes next, rings into Zone 3, and puts the fear into his fellow HouseGuests. Scott later says, "We're all freaking out that Mike is the Hula Hoop champion of Michigan."
Per Mike's plan, Holly is quickly eliminated. Then, at Scott's urging and to his great joy, Nakomis throws the game. Her actions lead Scott to believe he's pulling the strings. "That kind of demonstrated the amount of power I have," he brags. It's down to just Scott, Jase and Mike. But, when Jase hits one into Zone 4, it's all over for Mike.
Jase wants Scott to win, to even up the power in the Four Horsemen alliance. He feels that with him in the position of HOH, and Scott holding the Veto, they are all-powerful. In the final battle between Scott and Jase, Scott comes through and wins the Power of Veto.
GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE POWER
The girls are feeling the need--the need for an alliance. Adria and Diane are the foundation of a burgeoning girl power alliance. Adria sees things plainly: "It's turning into a battle of the sexes." She adds, "It's like chess, you got to look one move ahead." Diane wants to get the girls together and take the house over. With a gleam in her eye she says, "How cool would it be if I took one of those guys out?"
Diane goes on a recruitment program, pulling in Nakomis and Lori and working on Drew and Will. As the gay man in the house, Will is in a great tactical position and he knows it. "I consider myself one of the girls," he ably puts it. As Diane is talking to Will, she makes a tactical mistake, saying, "I would like to keep you and Drew as long as possible." This sets off all kinds of alarms in the heart and head of the young man from Tupelo, Mississippi, and whatever plans he may have made for allying with the girls are thrown to the four winds.
Will quickly tells Drew, then Drew tells Jase, and the line in the sand between boys and girls, between men and women is drawn. For a moment, this leads to Scott suggesting that he use the Power of the Veto to keep Mike around and put up Adria. But, in the end, Scott chooses not to change a thing. Jennifer and Mike remain up for the first eviction.
Tune in Thursday and find out who's first to go. Will it be Mike, a.k.a. the Don, who's seen as a major threat by the Four Horsemen? Or will it be Jennifer, a.k.a. Nakomis, half-sister to Michael? And, what's the deal with the twin who's swapping in and out? Find out at 8pm in the season's first eviction ceremony on BIG BROTHER 5. | comments: Leave a comment |
| The Amazing Race 5 Recap: After a strong showing in the first leg, dating couple Alison & Donny fell apart when Teams traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the Argentine city, several Teams struggled with a stressful dog-walking Detour, causing tempers to flare. When faced with a choice of transportation to the countryside Pit Stop location at La Porteña, most Teams opted for a taxi ride. But three Teams, Alison & Donny, married parents Chip & Kim and twins Kami & Karli, chose to take a bus, placing them at the back of the pack. While a standoff over an available taxi at the bus station near La Invernada caused bad blood between the twins and Chip & Kim, dating couple Alison & Donny, bickering through their bus ride, arrived in last place and became the second Team eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE.
DISCO DANCING
After a mandatory rest period allowing Teams to eat, sleep and mingle, Alison & Donny departed the Pit Stop at Casa del Pueblo in first place at 12:48am. Opening their clue, the pair learned they must drive a marked vehicle 75 miles to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Once there, they needed to find the Shake Mega Disco, go inside onto the foam-filled dance floor crowded with revelers and search for their next clue hidden within inflated balls. On their sometimes volatile relationship raising issues in the Race, Alison remarked, "Yelling is our way of communicating, and we're still getting the job done."
Departing in second place at 12:51am, brothers Marshall & Lance got off to a rocky start when they took a wrong turn and found themselves at a dead end. This allowed bowling moms Linda & Karen, who departed at 12:54am, to pass the brothers before they could find the freeway to Montevideo. About her Team's chances, Linda said, "I know Karen really well. We've known each other for fifteen years. I think we're going to be a tough team."
Leaving Casa del Pueblo in fourth place at 1:05am internet dating couple Bob & Joyce commented on their age as a factor: "Us older folks are hanging in there, but they'll find out sooner or later. We're stronger than we look." On the heels of Bob & Joyce, cousins Charla & Mirna drove out of the Pit Stop, only to encounter the same dead end as Marshall & Lance, allowing dating couple Brandon & Nicole to pass them.
As the remaining four Teams departed Casa del Pueblo in quick succession, Linda & Karen arrived at the Shake Mega Disco followed closely by Alison & Donny. The two Teams stepped onto the crowded, foam-filled dance floor, looking for the inflatable balls. Finding one quickly, Linda tore it open and took the clue from inside. Reading it, she discovered she and Karen must drive 100 miles to the ferry station at Colonial de Sacramento and then travel by ferry to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As Linda & Karen and Alison & Donny made their way to the ferry station, other Teams began descending upon Montevideo. While Marshall & Lance, Bob & Joyce and Brandon & Nicole quickly found Shake Mega Disco, Chip & Kim became lost, as did Charla & Mirna, who asked for directions from a woman of questionable repute at a bus stop. After finding their clue, Kim complained to Chip how she was groped on the dance floor by unruly patrons, a problem also encountered by Nicole. Charla & Mirna, finally having found the disco, noted that father and daughter Jim & Marsha were moments ahead of them. Mirna said, "That Team was last. Now they're ahead of us."
Arriving at Colonial de Sacramento in first place, Alison & Donny purchased tickets for the first ferry at 4:30am. Soon other Teams began arriving in quick succession, except for Charla & Mirna, who were lost again. Nicole commented, "We're hoping one Team doesn't make this ferry so we can get a break." With only 20 minutes left until the ferry departed, the cousins were asking a gas station attendant for directions. As the Teams settled into their seats for the ferry ride to Argentina, Charla & Mirna desperately ran for the ticket window. The gangway was already retracted, and the cousins begged to get on. With the help of a nice worker who held the ferry, the cousins made it on board in time. Charla commented, "My size is an advantage, because most people think I can't do anything."
DOGGONE DETOUR
When the ten Teams landed in Buenos Aires, they needed to find the correct cemetery, Recoleta, and search through thousands of monuments for the grave of former Argentinean first lady, Evita Peron, to find their next clue. While most Teams received the correct information from locals, Colin & Christie, Bob & Joyce and Chip & Kim were incorrectly told to go to the Chacarita cemetery. Brandon & Nicole also received the bad information, but their cab driver corrected the mistake. With all Teams headed to either cemetery, Jim & Marsha trailed the pack because Linda & Karen had told them to exchange their American dollars. After seeing that the other Teams didn't exchange money, Marsha said, "I think the moms…screwed us."
After a rocky beginning, Charla & Mirna arrived at the Recoleta cemetery in first place, passing Linda & Karen and Alison & Donny at its gates. Reaching Evita's tomb, the cousins ripped open their clue to discover a Detour. This Detour required Teams to choose between "Perro" or "Tango." Teams choosing Perro, the Spanish word for dog, must take on the extremely popular job of dog walking. One Team member must take charge of eight dogs while the other uses a map to navigate them past a series of checkpoints to their final destination, one mile away at a statue called La Flor. Teams were able to begin the task immediately because the dogs were right outside the cemetery. Teams opting for Tango must travel through crowded streets 1.5 miles across town to a theater and search among similar-looking tango dancers for the man pictured in the program, who would give them their next clue. If Teams found the wrong man, he would take their program, forcing them to get a new program and try again. Charla & Mirna opted for Tango, heading out of the cemetery quickly, while Linda & Karen chose Perro.
Stuck in gridlock traffic, Mirna questioned whether she and Charla made the correct Detour choice. Meanwhile, Linda & Karen struggled to maintain control of their very active dogs. Faced with the same options, Marshall & Lance, Alison & Donny and Brandon & Nicole all chose Tango. However, seeing the pack of dogs waiting anxiously outside the cemetery, Donny convinced Alison to switch to Perro. Instantly, trouble began as Alison, the dog walker, screamed at Donny, the navigator, to take her bag. Donny shouted, "Shut up! I'm reading this!" To make matters worse, Alison complained that her dogs kept having sex.
Arriving at the theater, Charla & Mirna entered to find dozens of couples tango dancing. Seeing that many of the men looked strikingly similar, Mirna commented, "This is too difficult to figure out." She made a decision and handed her program to a dancer, who took it without giving her the clue. Getting a second chance, Mirna got it right, and the cousins received their next clue, instructing them to take a taxi or a bus 70 miles to La Estancia La Invernada, an Argentine ranch, to find the next Route Marker. The cousins chose a cab ride, even though it was considerably more expensive, to ensure they would arrive faster. Mirna observed, "There's no doubt in my mind: if we take a bus to this place, we will be eliminated." Finishing Tango soon after, Brandon & Nicole opted for the cab ride as well.
Walking the dogs proved an exercise in futility for both Alison & Donny and Linda & Karen. Teaming up to find the checkpoints more quickly didn't seem to help. A furious Alison yelled at Donny, "We didn't pass by three checkpoints!" Frustrated, Donny added, "This is the worse one ever." A resigned Alison replied, "Well, you know what? We're done." Realizing this could cost them the Race, both Alison & Donny and Linda & Karen threw in the towel on Perro and hoped for better luck with Tango. On the car ride to the theater, Donny & Alison continued to bicker with Donny calling Alison an "embarrassment."
While most remaining Teams figured looking for a tango dancer would be much easier, two other Teams decided to walk the dogs. Twins Kami & Karli found the task daunting until they found a local to guide them. Across town, as Teams identified their tango dancers, they all considered whether to take a bus or taxi. Wanting to save money, Donny decided he and Alison would take the bus, while Marshall & Lance, Colin & Christie, Jim & Marsha and Linda & Karen all took taxis. In the back of the pack, Chip & Kim and Kami & Karli met up at the bus station and took an express bus together, while last-place Bob & Joyce opted for the taxi.
ON THE FARM
Arriving at La Invernada, cousins Charla & Mirna and dating couple Brandon & Nicole encountered their first Roadblock. A Roadblock is a task that only one person may perform. In this Roadblock, that person must play a game called ribbon roping traditionally played by children on a ranch. Participants must enter a corral and attempt to remove a bandana from the neck of one of the calves. Since they were not allowed to tackle the animals, the task could prove frustrating. Once they got the bandana, a gaucho would hand them their next clue. Choosing to perform the task for their Teams, Brandon and Mirna each learned how difficult it could be to snag a bandana off a calf. Encouraging her timid partner, Charla cheered, "Come on, Mirna! You can do it! They're afraid of you!"
As Teams made their way to La Invernada, Brandon finally managed to snag a bandana and Mirna grabbed one immediately after. Both Teams opened their clue that, instructed them to travel by horse-drawn carriage two miles to La Porteña, a 150-year-old estate in the Argentine countryside and the Pit Stop for this leg of the Race. Running to their carriage, Brandon & Nicole took the lead hoping for a first-place finish. On their carriage, Mirna said, "We're going to run our hearts out, and maybe something good will happen." Arriving at La Porteña, the two Teams quickly left their carriages and raced across the beautiful lawns to the mat where host Phil Keoghan waited. While Charla gave it her all, it wasn't quite enough as dating couple Brandon & Nicole finished in first place. Arriving in second place, cousins Charla & Mirna celebrated their strong showing. Charla remarked, "I am determined to get to that finish line to win the million dollars and show the world what I'm capable of."
STANDOFF
As Jim & Marsha and Linda & Karen sped to third and fourth place finishes respectively, Chip & Kim and Kami & Karli arrived at the bus station needing a taxi to take them to La Invernada. Having spotted one, Kami began running towards it, only to find herself in a footrace with Chip, who was trying to claim it for his Team. The two competitors got into the back seat from opposite sides, and neither would relinquish their position. Chip stood his ground until a second taxi arrived, and both Teams headed for La Invernada. About the incident, Kami remarked, "It felt like it turned really ugly just now." Karli added, "I'm so pissed because Chip turned into a completely different person. I did not like Chip."
With Bob & Joyce, Colin & Christie and Marshall & Lance arriving at the Pit Stop in fifth, sixth and seventh place, the pressure began to mount for Kami & Karli and Chip & Kim. Kami and Chip opted to perform the Roadblock for their Teams and hurried into the corral. As each of them managed to snag a bandana, Alison & Donny arrived, trying to catch up.
ELIMINATION
On the carriage ride, Chip remarked, "This could be an elimination round." Kami feared, "This is our last chance to stay in the game." Racing from the carriage, Chip & Kim beat the twins to the mat for an eighth-place finish. Arriving in ninth place, stunned Kami & Karli commented, "You know what? We played fair."
Arriving at the Pit Stop in last place, dating couple Alison & Donny were told by Phil Keoghan that they had been eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. On going from first to worst, Donny said, "We expected to be up there in the front of the pack again, but we got ourselves in a hole too deep we couldn't get ourselves out." On her partner, Alison noted, "Donny and I haven't had the healthiest relationship, ever. It's been rough." Adding a final comment on their rocky relationship, Donny remarked, "Dealing with Alison was the hardest part of the Race for me. I hate her. I can't believe I'm here with her. I'd rather change partners than be with her. This Race has really taught me to redefine my love for Alison." | comments: Leave a comment |
| Big Brother 5 Recap: CAT'S OUT OF THE BAG; MIKE & JENNIFER NOMINATED
In the summer's first nomination ceremony, first HoH Jase nominates Mike and Jennifer for eviction. But before the ceremony, Michael decides to reveal to the Four Horsemen (formerly the Knights) first that Jennifer, a.k.a. Nakomis, is his half-sister. Pulling Jase and Scott aside, he lets them in on his secret, recounting how he put the pieces together: the father's name, the tour in Vietnam, the foot blown off. The initial reactions are shock and disbelief. Initially, Jase is stunned, saying, "I'm just tripping out of my mind." Then he thinks he's being gamed, adding, "I have a problem with the timing." Scott, too, is skeptical: "I didn't believe it."
After some internal discussion, Jase suggests bringing in Nakomis and talking with her. Without hemming and hawing, Michael just puts it out there: "We have the same father." Nakomis suspects he might be messing with her, but after Marvin has Michael, whom he affectionately calls Cowboy, swear on the Bible that he is indeed telling the truth, Nakomis begins to think it might be real. She sums it up in her own unique way, "If that's so, that is a trip."
A group meeting is called, and everybody is let in on the secret. Jaws drop, shock ensues and people try to get their bearings. Whatever doubt there may have been is dispelled after Michael and Nakomis are called into the Diary Room, and each emerge with a letter from their father. They then each read their letters, Michael breaking into tears as he reads aloud, "You now have two sisters and three brothers."
The emotional shockwaves reverberate through the House. In the Diary Room, Will lets on that he finds the news colorful: "Michael delivers this Jerry Springer-ish news." Marvin is doubtful: "Guilty until proven innocent." Drew agrees with Marvin. Feeling the heat, Michael acknowledges the tension, admitting, "It changes things a little bit."
HoH: THE POWER AND THE GLORY
Jase is psyched to assume his place as Head of Household. "It's totally pimp. It's like a sultan's lair." He settles into his leader position, enjoying the power and declaring boldly, "Fear me." He also discovers the plasma screen built into the wall that allows him to view EVERYTHING going on in the house. He can see who's talking with whom, when and where; he just can't hear what they're saying. Showing the strength of the Four Horsemen's alliance, he shows off his super-secret surveillance system to his peeps.
Though the Four Horsemen alliance is holding strong, Jase recognizes the need to expand his power base, warning, "I'm branching out." Mike, feeling left out, tries to do some coalition-building of his own. He tells Jase, "I feel threatened that nobody is talking to me." Mike first tries to work with Diane, then moves on to talk with Drew. Drew plays it cool and reports back to the Horsemen on Mike's state of mind, "He's sweatin' it. He's sweatin' it."
MARGARITA MADNESS MAMBO
Having fun with his position as HoH, Jase has all the men get dressed up in women's panties in preparation for the Luxury Competition: Margarita Madness. Will is one HouseGuest who thinks it's fun saying, "Seeing Drew's butt in a thong is the hottest thing I've seen in weeks." Mike, as befits a 41-year-old single dad, refuses to put on women's underwear.
With the robust exhortation, "All right, pimps and hos," Jase calls the HouseGuests into the backyard. The task before them is to build a giant margarita: shave the ice, ice the glass, fill glass with tequila and mixer, drop a giant lime--a giant Human lime-- into the glass, then grab the key that will unlock the gate over the hot tub. If the HouseGuests complete the task in under 10 minutes, not only do they get hot tub privileges, they also get a much-needed Mexican fiesta.
Jase divvies up the tasks, and everybody performs admirably. Marvin puts his gravedigger skills to work, Scott and Drew fill the giant glass with water coolers full of tequila, and Will engages in serious hard labor with a yoke across his back filled with metal buckets full of margarita mix. He's honest that it's not his cup of tea: "Nurses don't do yokes. I'm going to look like a battered housewife tomorrow."
Michael, dressed in the giant lime suit, slides down into the giant glass. Marvin's gift for color commentary is clear as he says of Michael's slide, "Cowboy looked like the 'Fruit of the Loom' poster child." Michael grabs the key with 18 seconds left to spare. PARTY!
THE FIESTA AND THE FINALITY
Having succeeded at the Luxury Competition, all the HouseGuests are thrilled to eat real food, though Marvin might be a little too thrilled. He eats four quesadillas to everybody else's one, endearing himself to no one. Marvin also is getting tagged as a person more interested in working on the women than on the game. His philosophy of courtship? "You work on the hedonistic factor."
As Jase begins to deliberate on who will be nominated, the HouseGuests start to realize it's not just a giant party. Though he enjoys being HoH, Jase also finds it unsettling: "When I was putting keys in the box, it's not a fun thing to do."
Without further ado, the nomination ceremony begins. Holly is the first to be safe. Slowly, each key is lifted, leaving only Mike and Nakomis. Jase faces the nominees and tells them how he came to his decision. To Mike, he says, "Word travels fast. You're the professional. I consider you the biggest gamer." To Nicomas, he just says, "We haven't had a chance to get to know each other."
Nakomis takes the news in stride, but Mike appears to be upset. Who will be the first to go? Mike or Nakomis? Or perhaps some new twist will force someone else to leave the House? Find out next week on BIG BROTHER 5. | comments: Leave a comment |
| The Amazing Race 5 Recap: A 75,000-mile race around the world began with a bang as ex-military man Jim fell on the boardwalk of the Santa Monica Pier. His injured knee required stitches and almost caused him and daughter Marsha to miss their flight to Uruguay. Once in Uruguay, Teams struggled to carry an enormous side of beef and faced their fears on a zip line 18 stories above the ground. After missing a clue at a Route Marker, married couple Chip & Kim and twins Kami & Karli were forced to go back, allowing dating couple Alison & Donny to cruise into first place. Nice guy Dennis allowed other Teams to take taxis in front of him and Erika, causing their last-place finish and elimination from THE AMAZING RACE.
AND THEY'RE OFF! The fifth installment of THE AMAZING RACE began along the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, California, as lifeguard transport vehicles carried 11 Teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, to the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. The Teams are Brandon & Nicole, a dating Christian couple from Los Angeles; Kami & Karli, identical twins from Eugene, Oregon; Linda & Karen, best friends, mothers and amateur bowlers from Palmdale, California; Marshall & Lance, brothers who run a pizza restaurant in Dallas, Texas; Charla & Mirna, cousins from Baltimore, Maryland; Dennis & Erika, formerly engaged, now trying to find their way back together from New York; Bob & Joyce, widowers who found each other on the internet, from Mount Laurel, New Jersey; Colin & Christie, dating from Corpus Christie, Texas; Chip & Kim, married parents from Orange County, California; Jim & Marsha, an ex-military father/daughter wanting a closer relationship from Florida; and Alison & Donny, an on-again, off again-couple from Pennsylvania.
Host Phil Keoghan met the Teams on the edge of the Santa Monica Pier, where he informed them there would be thirteen legs on this race, with eight being elimination points. However, he also warned of a new twist for the last-place Team on a non-elimination leg that would make their lives "very, very difficult." Wishing the Teams good luck and adding, "The world is waiting for you," Phil signaled the start of the race around the world for one million dollars.
As the Teams ran along the boardwalk, two people--ex-military man Jim and Dennis--fell amid the jostling for position, but recovered quickly and joined the race to get their bags and the first clue. Switching on the afterburners, dating couple Colin & Christie ripped open their clue first and discovered they must find the hand in the sand in Uruguay. Teams also learned they could only travel on one of two available flights, on which seating was first come, first served.
In the lead off the pier, dating couple Colin & Christie opted for surface streets, taking advantage of the fact that Christie used to live in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, twins Kami & Karli, dating couple Alison & Donny and couple Dennis & Erika all headed for the freeway. Marsha drove off the pier as her father, Jim, assessed his injury: a bloody knee caused when fell on a nail on the boardwalk. When Marsha expressed concern over the noticeable wound, Jim replied, "It's okay, baby! Go, go!"
As the last-place Team, internet dating couple Bob & Joyce, left the pier, Colin & Christie were already seeing signs for LAX. The Texans continued to set the pace, arriving at the Park One parking lot first and taking a shuttle to the American Airlines terminal, intending to secure tickets on the earlier flight to Uruguay. In a battle for second place, brothers Marshall & Lance parked their car, followed closely by Dennis & Erika, Alison & Donny and Kami & Karli. Getting on a shuttle first, Marshall & Lance told their driver to continue past the other three Teams waiting to board. On the next shuttle, Dennis & Erika, Alison & Donny and Kami & Karli made a pact to work together to determine the better flight to take.
HOLD THAT LINE With cousins Charla & Mirna lost and best friends Linda & Karen still on the freeway, Colin & Christie entered the American Airlines terminal, followed by Marshall & Lance. The two Teams quickly became perplexed when they couldn't find the flagged counter to purchase tickets. Their confusion allowed Dennis & Erika to arrive first at the American counter. Dennis & Erika's allies, Allison & Donny and Kami & Karli, were first to arrive at the United Airlines counter. BIG BROTHER 4 finalist Alison discovered that the United flight was leaving later than the American flight, but it would arrive in Uruguay first because of a shorter layover. She and Donny, along with Kami & Karli, were the first two Teams ticketed on the United flight, which could hold a total of seven Teams.
Meanwhile, unaware of the information their alliance partners had received, Dennis & Erika purchased tickets on the slower American flight and held up the line forming behind them to secure two more seats for their friends. Married parents Chip & Kim, internet dating couple Bob & Joyce, brothers Marshall & Lance and dating couple Colin & Christie all expressed their discontent as Dennis stalled for almost twenty minutes, hoping his alliance members would return. Realizing the tension they were creating, Erika remarked, "Every other Team hates us right now!" Finally Kami & Karli arrived to deliver the news to Dennis & Erika that the United flight arrives an hour before the American flight. However, Dennis & Erika had already purchased their tickets on American and couldn't exchange them for the earlier-arriving United flight. Soon, also unaware of this information, Colin & Christie, Marshall & Lance and Chip & Kim secured the remaining three spots on the slower flight.
Back at the United terminal, the late-arriving Teams, including Linda & Karen, Charla & Mirna and Jim & Marsha, all received a pleasant surprise when they learned they would be on the faster flight to Uruguay with Alison & Donny, Kami & Karli and dating couples Brandon & Nicole and Bob & Joyce. Jim & Marsha's celebration was tempered when an airport paramedic inspecting Jim's injury told him he required stitches. As Jim & Marsha were transported to a nearby emergency medical clinic, the four Teams on the slower American flight boarded their plane bound for Uruguay. Chip commented, "It's disconcerting being on a slower flight behind seven other Teams."
In a race against the clock, Jim & Marsha arrived at the clinic, where Jim received medical attention. Leaving the clinic, Jim informed Marsha that his cut had required 25 stitches and had almost taken out a tendon. With their United flight now boarding, a nervous Jim & Marsha found themselves in traffic, unsure whether they would make the flight before it departed. The other six Teams were in their seats when Jim & Marsha rushed to the gate in the nick of time. Once on the plane, Jim joked, "Probably would have been quicker just to amputate the leg."
HAND IN THE SAND After traveling more than 6800 miles, the first seven Teams landed in Uruguay to learn that they must take a 75-mile bus ride to the town of Punta del Este and find the hand in the sand, a statue that sits on the beach along some of the roughest waters in South America. The fingers of the statue represent the last thing you see of a person before they drown. All seven Teams on the earlier flight boarded the first bus leaving for Punta del Este just as the slower flight carrying the remaining four Teams landed in Uruguay. Getting on a bus forty minutes behind the first bus, Colin commented, "We're a little bit concerned about the fact that we're in the back of the pack."
As Colin and the other Teams on the second bus worried, Brandon spotted the hand on the beach across the street as the first bus pulled into the station. Cousins Charla & Mirna took a quick lead running off the bus, but were soon passed by dating couple Brandon & Nicole, who reached the clue first. Opening it, the pair received instructions to travel by ferry to Gorriti Island to find their next clue. Believing that every second counts, dating couples Alison & Donny and Bob & Joyce, twins Kami & Karli, father/daughter Jim & Marsha and cousins Charla & Mirna all flagged down taxis to the port to catch a ferry. Only dating couple Brandon & Nicole and best friends Linda & Karen opted to walk. Pointing out that everybody else was taking cabs, Nicole became annoyed when Brandon replied, "It's okay. We have to save our money."
Arriving at the port in first place, Bob & Joyce happily boarded the ferry, only to become disappointed at the appearance of Alison & Donny and Kami & Karli before the ferry could depart. Making it to the port a few minutes later, a limping Jim & Marsha and cousins Charla & Mirna took a second ferry to Gorriti Island. Still walking, an angry Nicole told Brandon, "We're in last now. We've got to focus on making smart decisions together." Brandon replied, "I need you to support me, Nic." The pair arrived at the dock with Linda & Karen and took a third ferry to the island.
INTO THE WOODS As the second bus carrying Colin & Christie, Dennis & Erika, Chip & Kim and Marshall & Lance arrived in Punta del Este; the first ferry reached the shores of Gorriti Island. Jumping off the ferry, Alison & Donny, Bob & Joyce and Kami & Karli all opened clues informing them to search among 100 marked trees in a nearby wooded area for tickets for ferries leaving the next morning at three different times: 8 am, 8:30 am and 9 am. Once a Team ripped a ticket off a tree, they could not change their minds. Running into the woods, Alison shouted at Donny, "Look for times before you rip it!" After finding an 8 am and a 9 am ticket, the pair kept looking while twins Kami & Karli grabbed an 8:30 am ticket, unaware they could have done better. As the second ferry carrying Charla & Mirna and Jim & Marsha landed on the island, Alison & Donny and Bob & Joyce each secured spots on the 8 am ferry the next morning. After rebuffing attempts by Charla & Mirna to work together, Jim & Marsha found an 8:30 am ticket. Charla & Mirna, also finding an 8:30 am ticket, said about Jim & Marsha, "They're playing nice, but they're not."
Arriving on the third ferry, Linda & Karen found the final ticket for the 8 am ferry, leaving Brandon & Nicole to find 9 am tickets. Soon, the dating Christian couple was joined by the Teams on the final ferry. Colin observed, "Look, they're still looking for theirs." All five Teams took the remaining tickets on the 9 am ferry. A disappointed Brandon felt responsible for his Team going from the first flight to the last ferry because of his decision to walk to the port. Feeling in a similar position, Chip joked, "Here we go again. The bottom feeders."
MALDONADO MEAT After a night of rest allowing Teams to relax and mingle with one another, Bob & Joyce, Alison & Donny and Linda & Karen departed Gorriti Island at 8 am, returning to the shores of Punta del Este. At the port, the three Teams found their next clue instructing them to make their way to the suburb of Maldonado to find the next Route Marker at the Jose Francisco Gonzales meat warehouse. They all decided to take the bus together to Maldonado just as Kami & Karli, Charla & Mirna and Jim & Marsha all docked at Punta del Este. The cousins quickly found the cluebox and sneaked away, leaving Jim & Marsha and Kami & Karli to walk endlessly up and down the docks. As Charla & Mirna hailed a taxi, the twins carelessly strolled passed the box. Charla remarked, "They wouldn't even talk to us. That's what they get for it."
Arriving in Maldonado, Alison & Donny took a quick lead off the bus, but were shocked to see Charla & Mirna's taxi pull up behind them. Alison yelled, "There's the midget. Go!" Arriving at the meat warehouse, both Teams ripped open their clue. The clue instructed them to carry a 55-pound side of beef one-half mile to a butcher shop, La Rosada Carniceria. Once they complete the task, Teams would receive their next clue. With Bob & Joyce and Linda & Karen close behind, couple Alison & Donny took the lead. Donny carried the cumbersome beef, while Charla & Mirna struggled together.
Couple Alison & Donny became the first Team to reach the Yield, a new feature in the Race. There is only one Yield on each leg of the Race. The Team that uses it may force a Team behind them to stop racing for a pre-determined length of time. A Team forced to Yield must turn over an hourglass and wait for the sand to run out before they move on, even as other Teams pass them. However, Teams can only exercise their Yield power once during the Race, so they must decide when it is in their best interest to use it. Alison & Donny decided not to exercise their Yield option on this leg and continued on with their side of beef. Meanwhile, back on the docks, Jim & Marsha and Kami & Karli finally found the cluebox just as the last five Teams arrived on shore from the 9 am ferry. All seven Teams raced to Maldonado in hopes of catching the four lead Teams.
As Alison & Donny continued to lead the way, Bob & Joyce and Linda & Karen kept up, but Charla & Mirna showed signs of trouble. "The beef was disgusting," Mirna later complained, "The cow smelled. I don't even eat beef cooked, let alone just raw beef." As Mirna forced herself to continue carrying the heavy beef, Alison & Donny placed their side of beef in the meat locker at the carniceria and claimed their next clue. The clue instructed the Team to return to Punta del Este and find the Route Marker across the street from the blue and white hotel. Alison & Donny hurried into a cab as Bob & Joyce and Linda & Karen deposited their meat in second and third place.
Finding the energy to keep walking, cousins Charla & Mirna realized they were lost and had walked four blocks past the butcher shop. This allowed twins Kami & Karli and the still-injured Jim & Marsha to catch up. Running out of the shop in fourth place, Charla & Mirna became exasperated looking for a taxi. Mirna lamented, "After we carried that beef, we cannot lose because we can't find a taxi." The cousins eventually found a taxi, but a logjam formed as the other seven Teams all completed the task and had to wait while locals called taxis for them.
Standing in an area separate from the larger group, Marshall & Lance and Chip & Kim grabbed the next available cabs. Being the first of the larger group to call for a taxi, Kami & Karli also headed back to Punta del Este. Having called together, Dennis & Erika, Colin & Christie, Brandon & Nicole and Jim & Marsha had to decide which Teams got to take the taxis first. After the Los Angeles airport incident in which he held up the line, Dennis offered a "good faith gesture" and let the other three Teams take taxis first. This left Dennis & Erika to take the final cab to Punta del Este. A frustrated Erika told Dennis, "I don't know why you'd let them take a taxi before us."
DARING DETOUR Dating couple Alison & Donny continued to set the pace, but instead of going to the cluebox across the street from the hotel, they entered the hotel itself after seeing yellow and red flags. Alison quickly realized their mistake, but the pair was passed by bowling moms Linda & Karen as both Teams opened their clue to discover a Detour. A Detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons. In this Detour, Teams had to choose either "Zips" or "Chips." Teams choosing Zips must make their way to the top of the hotel and pull themselves across a horizontal zip line 210 feet above the ground. Once on the other side, they must take a second zip line 18 stories down to the pool below. While this option was frightening, Teams with guts could finish quickly. Teams opting for Chips must make their way into the hotel casino to play roulette with 20 chips. They would receive their next clue only if they hit their number. While the task wasn't scary, the gamble was. If they didn't get the clue, they still had to complete the Zips option and would have only succeeded in wasting time. Linda & Karen, Alison & Donny and Bob & Joyce all made their way to the roof of the hotel to perform Zips.
As the Teams geared up and pulled themselves across the zip line, Kami & Karli arrived at the hotel and followed the flags directly into the casino without finding the Route Marker. Unaware they made a mistake, the twins began playing the roulette game. On the roof, Alison overcame her fear of heights to complete the Zips Detour with Donny. The couple opened the next clue, which directed them to travel by taxi to the first Pit Stop ten miles away at Casa del Pueblo. The last Team to check in would be eliminated.
Back in the casino, twins Kami & Karli got lucky and hit their bet, 17 black, thus winning their clue. Making the same mistake as the twins, married parents Chip & Kim also entered the casino without seeing the Route Marker and began to play roulette. The couple was soon joined by brothers Marshall & Lance, who got their Detour instructions before entering the casino. The brothers won on the first bet by playing their family's birthdays. Having also finished Zips, Linda & Karen joined Marshall & Lance, Alison & Donny and Chip & Kim, who completed Chips on the next bet after the brothers, in a cab race to the Pit Stop. On the way to Casa del Pueblo, Kami & Karli realized they may have made a mistake by not crossing the street from the blue-and-white hotel to get their clue.
As Bob & Joyce finished the zip line, Brandon & Nicole and Jim & Marsha reached the cluebox and opted for Zips, while Charla & Mirna excitedly headed for Chips, declaring, "We are a gambling phenomenon." As Brandon & Nicole braved the heights of the zip line, Jim & Marsha got lost looking for the roof, allowing Colin & Christie to pass them. In the casino, cousins Charla & Mirna celebrated hitting their lucky number and rushed to the Pit Stop. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Big Brother 5 Recap: MEET THE HOUSEGUESTS: IT'S ALL RELATIVE
Let the games begin. It's the first show of a new BIG BROTHER season, and this year's theme is Do Not Assume. Project DNA for short. Nothing is as it seems. Everything is open to interpretation. With BIG BROTHER 5, you never know who you're living with for the summer.
This year, there's a twist so big it could impact the lives of the contestants as much or more than if they win the big prize. The big twist? Two of the HouseGuests are related. On BIG BROTHER 5, there might just be a long-lost brother you'd been looking for your whole life or a sister you didn't know you had.
Ranging in age from 21 to 41 and hair color from purple to balding, our HouseGuests hail from all parts of the union. There's Mike, the 41-year-old commercial painter from Eastpointe, Michigan; Diane, the 22-year-old cocktail waitress from Burlington, Kentucky; Michael, the 23-year-old security officer (who's partial to wearing his cowboy hat--even when brushing his teeth) from Durant, Oklahoma and Holly, the Los Angeles model who is named after Hollywood and will only give her age as 20s. Of course, no household is complete without a resident mortician, and BIG BROTHER is no different: it's got 36-year old Marvin the mortician from Conway, South Carolina.
The thirteen gather in front of the House and get their marching orders from host Julie Chen. First to enter the house are Adria, the 30-year-old web designer from Birmingham, Alabama; Lori, the 26-year-old yoga instructor from Boston; Jase, the 28-year-old firefighter from Decatur, Illinois and cowboy Michael. After getting a look at the concrete room--you sleep on a slab--the quartet chooses the wood room.
Next up: Drew, the 22-year-old recent college grad, Holly, Jennifer, the 21-year-old restaurant hostess from San Antonio, Marvin and Scott, the 26-year-old sales rep from Pittsburgh. We get to see a little bit of strategy as Marvin chooses the cot. His philosophy? He wants everybody to think he's "taking one for the team."
The final group rolls in and finds that the worst-case scenario has come true: they will be sleeping on concrete slabs.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU: HOOKUP CENTRAL
It promises to be a hot summer as the scoping begins the moment everybody lays eyes on each other. Jase puts it out there right away, observing, "There's tons of cute girls in the House," and Holly quickly pigeonholes some of the men of the House saying, "Drew and Scott--that jock/fratboy type," which doesn't necessarily seem like a bad thing.
Marvin plays Master of Ceremonies as everybody introduces themselves. The sole individual that people seem to think is a goner for good is Jennifer, who with her tattoos and purple hair already stands out. The situation is only made worse when she announces, "I prefer to be called 'Nakomis.' It means, 'Daughter of the Moon.'"
FOOD COMPETITION : HUNGRY, HUNGRY HELIX
Meet-and-greets completed, Julie invites the HouseGuests into the backyard for the first Food Competition. We get a little insight into how Holly sees things when she refers to the giant double helix spinning in the backyard as "the giant moleculey thingy."
Each HouseGuest must crawl across the oversized spinning strand of DNA, plucking yellow balls from the apparatus and placing those balls in a bag as they go along. Each yellow ball has a food item written on it, a food item that everybody in the House will then get to eat, including high-end goodies like filet mignon and lobster tail.
A nervous Michael goes first, and despite initial jitters, he shows how it's done. Marvin continues to showcase his gift for nimble linguistics, remarking, "Michael was great, that marsupial ability. He's got some 'monkey in the family.'" Holly is the only one to not complete the task, but the HouseGuests are thrilled as they hear of their upcoming meals. As Michael put it, "We are going to eat like kings and queens."
But just as Lori is adding her yellow balls to the total, Julie instructs her to hold onto the "Lobster Tail" ball that she retrieved. Later, Julie instructs her to open up the ball. Lori does as she's told, and inside the ball is a key. Julie then has Lori walk over to a chest and use the key to open the chest. Inside, Lori finds $10,000 in cash. For a moment, everything seems peachy as everybody gets to eat and Lori gets $10,000. But Julie quickly reveals the twist. If Lori keeps the money, the whole House loses all the groceries they earned and has to eat peanut butter and jelly for the week. If Lori decides not to keep the money, the $10,000 will be offered to the next HouseGuest, who will then decide whether they will keep the money or force the House to go on a PB&J diet.
Lori agonizes briefly, but decides to take the money, a decision that sits well with no one and makes her a clear target.
FIRST ALLIANCES: THE GAY CARD AND "SHE'S MY SISTER?!"
Jase, Drew, Scott and Michael quickly form a bond. Scott dubs them the "Knights of the Round Table," and there is camaraderie to spare between the boys.
Will, the 26-year-old registered nurse from Tupelo, Mississippi, lets Lori know that he's gay. He admits, "I don't want to play the Gay Card too early. I want us to just be sitting around at dinner one night, and I'll let slip about my boyfriend or something." Will feels a kinship to both Lori and Karen, the 30-year-old artist from Saddle Brook, New Jersey, and admits to being worried about "the Alpha Male contingent."
But the real excitement and energy comes from the slow revelation that Michael and Jennifer share a father. As everybody is talking about where they're from and talks about their parents, it becomes increasingly clear to Michael that Jennifer is the little sister he never knew he had. The few things Michael had ever known about his father were that his last name was Dedmon, he served in Vietnam and lost part of his foot while on tour there. As Jennifer reveals her last name, that her father did a tour in Vietnam and that he had part of his foot blown off, Michael begins to piece it together and manages to keep a lid on his emotions at the same time. "My emotions started tripping out hardcore. I was gasping for air." In a revealing moment, Michael admits that he came to win the money for his family, but it feels good to know who his father is.
TREADMILLS OF TERROR TO BE HoH
When the first Head of Household (HoH) Competition forces the HouseGuests to partner up, Will is the odd man out. The HouseGuests are split into six pairs, each with a Walker and a Talker. Julie will ask each of the Talkers a question that can be answered with yes or no. Depending on whether they answer the question correctly, their partner, the Walker, who is positioned on a treadmill, will have their speed increased or left the same. Whoever lasts the longest will have a shot at being Head of Household. Whoever loses slides back into a pile of mud and loses the chances of becoming HoH.
After a few rounds of questions highlighted by Marvin and Holly both getting questions about themselves wrong, the final teams are Scott and Jase versus Karen and Lori. But after 27 minutes of running, Karen falls back into the mud, leaving Jase and Scott the last team standing. Julie calls Will into play with the tiebreaker question, a question about himself that Jase answers correctly, thus becoming the first HoH!
Who will Jase nominate? What will happen if Michael tells Jennifer that he thinks she is his half-sister? Find out Thursday at 8PM ET/PT on the next episode of BIG BROTHER 5. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Survivor Recap: OLD ALLIANCES HOLD: KATHY VOTED OUT Proving that the old Chapera alliance remained alive and well, yet another former Mogo Mogo member faced the firing squad. Despite her strong campaign to break the core of the Chapera alliance, Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, the 50-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: MARQUESAS from Burlington, Vermont, was forced to hear her name read aloud at the Tribal Council and was sent home in a six-to-two decision. Shortly after the vote, Kathy concluded simply, "I wish I had gotten further. I wanted that million bucks so bad."
ENDLESS RAIN After returning from Tribal Council and battling a torrential downpour, the Chaboga Mogo tribe was saddened to find their fire had been reduced to a muddy puddle. The rain continued, hard, cold and relentless. "Freezing cold and soaking wet," moaned Rupert Boneham, the 40-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: PEARL ISLANDS PANAMA from Indianapolis, Indiana, "When the sun came up it was still bad, it was worse."
CHALLENGE: BIG BAD O-COURSE As the tribe assembled for a Challenge, they were surprised to learn that the competition would be for both Reward and Immunity. Host Jeff Probst explained that the castaways would have to navigate the most difficult obstacle course SURVIVOR has ever known. There would be two parts to the Challenge, with the first part consisting of two teams of four and the final part pitting the four winners against each other in a battle for Individual Immunity. The Team Reward would consist of letters from home as well as much-needed rain parkas. The Individual Reward would be a chance to watch a video from a loved one while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate. The victorious castaway would also win Immunity.
The members of Chaboga Mogo were then treated to a taste of the videos sent from their loved ones at home. As they all gazed tearfully at a television screen, their loved ones spoke to them from many miles away. The only way for these homesick castaways to see the rest of their videos would be to win this most difficult Challenge.
With the emotional video clip screenings completed, it was now time for the Challenge to begin. After captains Rupert and Alicia Calaway, the 35-year-old of SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK from Trumbull, Connecticut, were named, the tribe was separated into two teams of four. Rupert's team consisted of Kathy, Tom Buchanan, the 48-year-old tribe member of SURVIVOR: AFRICA from Rich Valley, Virginia and Jenna Lewis, the 26-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: BORNEO from Franklin, New Hampshire. Alicia's team consisted of Amber Brkich, the 25-year-old of SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK from Beaver, Pennsylvania, Rob Mariano, the 28-year-old All-Star of Survivor: Marquesas from Canton, Massachusetts and Shii Ann Huang, the 30-year-old tribe member of SURVIVOR: THAILAND from New York City.
The obstacle course involved a "tear-through" field in which the teams must fight through a gauntlet of twigs and small branches. The castaways must next navigate a series of balance beams, then participate in a military-style belly crawl. Next, the All-Stars must climb over a 10-foot wall, negotiate a blown out bridge, climb a rope ladder to a tower and cross a two-line rope bridge. One team member must then wait at a "flying fox," while the rest descended a ladder and dug out a buried flag. Once the team members had dug out the flag, the "flying fox" team member must zip down the line to grab a key to unlock the gate allowing the waiting team members to race to the finish line.
The Challenge started off in a flurry as both teams tore through the field of twigs and small branches, with Alicia's team taking the lead. The lead enlarged as Alicia's team reached the wall and scaled it in quick time. It wasn't much of a race as Rupert's team trailed from obstacle to obstacle. Despite some trouble building a bridge, Alicia's team kept their cool--and their lead--as they dug out their flag and crossed the finish line to claim the victory.
IMMUNITY UP FOR GRABS With Alicia's team having won the Reward, it was now time for them to compete against each other for Individual Immunity. Jeff Probst explained that this would involve solving a slide puzzle. The first person to complete the puzzle, slide out a knife and then chop a rope in order to raise their flag would win Immunity coupled with the complete video from their loved one at home.
The four castaways went to work quickly on their puzzle. After having some difficulty at first, Rob quickly figured out how to slide the knife out of the puzzle. He then triumphantly chopped the rope that raised his flag to seal his Immunity.
In an act of team allegiance, Rob chose to forgo seeing his video so that everybody could read their letters from home. Jeff Probst agreed to make that trade, and Rob's tribemates all hugged him in gratitude.
LETTERS FROM HOME After returning from the exhausting Challenge, the members of Chaboga Mogo separated in order to read their letters from home. In these private moments, emotions ran high as love from friends and family was quietly dispersed throughout the camp and surrounding areas. "It's just uplifting," noted a sentimental Rupert, "That gives me strength. I'll read it a thousand times in the next eleven days."
PANAMANIAN SCRAMBLE After reconnecting with their homes via the letters, the members of Chaboga Mogo still faced the burden of the upcoming Tribal Council. The game was back on as Kathy lobbied to break the old Chapera alliance led by Boston Rob. Knowing she was on the chopping block, Kathy petitioned Big Tom and Rupert, suggesting that the troika of Rob, Amber and Jenna would not allow anyone else to reach the Final Three. "I think we got some last-minute scrambling going on in Panama today," smiled a confident Rob.
In the end, that last-minute scramble proved to be in vain as the old Chapera alliance sent yet another former Mogo Mogo member out of the game. Kathy was sent packing in a six-to-two decision. Kathy becomes the second member of the Jury and will have a hand in deciding who will win the million-dollar prize and earn the title Sole Survivor.
Next Episode: Coming up Next Thursday, April 22 One castaway is angered when being called, by the group, the least deserving person to be an "All-Star." Winning the Reward Challenge gives one All-Star the rare power to decide what the others eat, from a juicy steak to a small, cold bowl of rice. Shii Ann annoys Alicia, who warns her to watch it, or her camp life will be pretty unpleasant.
American Idol Recap: What are you doing Thursday night? You're watching Idol, right? Not some other show? Say, about a bunch of singles and a couple of marrieds in New York are you? Well, even if you are, having fallen prey to a jumbled TV schedule in your TiVo-less domain, don't you worry. I'm going to recap every second of tonight's American Idol and throw in tons of amazingly hilarious commentary to boot!
But first, a Friends-cap in case you watched Idol Thursday and desperately need to know what happened a few channels over. In order, Joey ate a meatball sub, Ross went on a bad blind date, Chandler and Monica did more crazy baby planning and Rachel considered going back to Ross.
Back to Idol! Heeeeeeeeeeeeere we go! Last night, they sang for America. Eight people whose hopes and dreams lie in your hands. Don't you feel much guiltier now for not voting for everyone last night? How can you be so heartless? Find out tonight…on American Idol!
Seacrest struts out wearing a cake-eating grin and a…light suit! A light suit with bell bottom pants. Man, spring really is here. And now we can definitively say that Thursdays are Light Suit Day II for Ryan. The springy boy tells us that 24 million votes were received last night and the audience applauds. For…themselves? All their hard work burning up the phones last night, I guess.
We meet the judges and the contestants, but ever so briefly since we already know who they are. Then we recap last night's show, although with not nearly as much panache as my saucy transcript. Hey! Look who's here! It's the poorest kid in Beverly Hills, Brandon Walsh! Hey, did you know that Jason Priestley is on "Tru Calling"? And that "Tru Calling" is on is FOX right after "American Idol"? How serendipitous is it that Jason was sitting on the end of the aisle right where Seacrest was walking? Wow!
Moving on, Ryan briefly passes RJ Helton. Not giving RJ enough time to pitch his album or single or clothing line or whatever, Ryan moves onto to the judges, determined to prove a point. "Here! Read this prompter!" The judges gamely give it their best shot. "The the the Idol Idol Idol isn't isn't isn't just just just…" Ryan fairly beams. "Aha! It's not so easy, is it? Not just anybody can do this job! Or my other two jobs! I keep telling you!"
So, Idol alum Tamyra Gray is on TV after Idol tonight. And Idol alum/former Jaded dream object Christina Christian is on TV on Idol tonight. Got all that? While you're trying to figure it out, just watch Christina sing a completely unique song that no other performer in the world could handle. Laced up confidently in her outfit, Christina stands still while dancers swirl around her.
Results now. No groups, no fractions, no moving off the couch. For most of the contestants, at least. La Toya, the judges loved you last night. Shocking. You're fine. Fantasia, you too. And we're caught completely off guard by that. George Huff, you didn't do that Huff Bounce last night. Tonight…nothing will happen. You're fine. George celebrates Jasmine, you're a little doll baby. The judges were split on you. I've had my mind made up on you for weeks. And you're safe. Jennifer Hudson, you're becoming the Nikki McKibbin this year. The contestant most familiar with the bottom three trot. Tonight, you can teach it to somebody else! You're safe.
That leaves the bottom three, well, on the bottom couch. JPL, Diana and John Stevens. JPL, the judges were all over the board on you last night. Will that work shirt you're wearing tonight come in handy next week back at the nursery? The plant kind, not the baby kind. Diana, you're also becoming familiar with the bottom three. And apparently very familiar with looking like Mariah Carey. John Stevens. You…are John Stevens. If you and another redhead had a daughter, that kid would get free food at Wendy's for life. But are you safe?
You know what, this is all too much! We need a break! Okay, we go check the hockey scores, find out that Kovy netted one for the Habs, and we're back. In the middle of the stage, Diana holds John Stevens' hand through this harrowing ordeal. JPL, he's pretty much on his own. He'll need to lean on his tough guy shirts for support. Ryan, feeling as generous as man wearing baby blue bell bottoms, offers to send somebody back to safety tonight. Diana, have a seat. Once again, you're the subject of our heartless fakeout. Just like last week!
Jon. John. Now, will they hold hands to support each other before the decision? We'll find out…after the break! Ryan, noticing a camera swooping over the stage, instinctively turns toward it and begins following it before his handlers rope him back to center stage.
We come back from our final break and the Jo(h)ns are indeed not holding hands. Ryan tells Jon PL. that if he leaves, we'll all miss his dancing. Then he tells John S. that if he leaves, we'll all miss…his class act. So…the next one to go is…Jon Peter Lewis! Ooh, wait, that shouldn't get an exclamation point. This is a somber moment. Jon Peter Lewis. Well, kid, time to put the name patch back on the shirt. We'll see you on the Bearcat Monday morning at seven.
Seacrest! Out! JPL! In! For one last performance. I mean, if there's ever been a time to turn it loose, this is it. I'm expecting him to toss his shirt in to the audience, then stage dive to get it back. JPL, playing it low, does a lap of the audience, then grabs his dad for a little dancing. And even an old, bitter, useless cynic like me has to admit it's a nice moment.
So that's that. One less Jon. Um, so…one less Jon. I don't really have anything to add to that. Oh! New email column coming Monday. Miss it, and consider yourself uncool.

The Apprentice Recap: At Trump National Golf Club, Bill was in charge of the Chrysler Trump Golf Tournament. Bill got his group up at 4:30am to get an early start on the day. But the problems also started early. Bill's team had lost something of their own: a Marquis Jet sign. Marquis was an important sponsor of the tournament and the Trump organization had a contractual obligation to display their signs. On top of that, there was a frost delay on the course that would throw off everyone's schedule. As Bill was running around searching for the sign, representatives from Marquis Jet arrived. Bill greeted them warmly and acted like nothing was wrong - even when they asked about their sign. Bill then hustled back, looking for the missing sign. Finally, he decided to search through the trash dumpsters, where he found it. He met up again with the Marquis Jet representatives and they went off to put their sign up.
Kwame and Troy met with representatives from Operation Smile, the organization that the Jessica Simpson concert was benefiting. Operation Smile repairs childhood facial deformities for those who can't afford the procedures. Next, Kwame and Omarosa met Jessica and Nick in their suite, along with the Operation Smile representatives and Mark Brown, who runs Trump's hotels in Atlantic City, for a VIP breakfast. The only problem? There was no breakfast. The breakfast was originally Omarosa's responsibility, but she handed it off to Troy. The hotel's Food and Beverage Manager said that Troy never told him the exact time of the breakfast. Mark Brown was not happy. He pulled Kwame aside and said that this makes them all look bad. In an interview, Mark said, "We're looking at Kwame under pressure and he seems to be cracking a little bit."
Donald arrived at Trump National Golf Course where Bill was running around checking on things. Bill touched base with Donald, who announced to the room that if Bill screws up, he'll fire Bill, "like a dog." Donald then wanted to play golf. Bill told him about the frost delay. Donald told Bill in no uncertain terms that he wanted to play by 10:30am. In an interview, Bill admitted he was feeling the pressure.
Omarosa blamed Troy for the breakfast failure and said that the meet and greet with Jessica, the press and her fans must go flawlessly. Heidi, who was in charge of the event, had a problem with the fact that Kwame suddenly put Troy on the event too. In an interview, Heidi said that she feels like Kwame doesn't trust her. And she said that if your boss doesn't trust you and company morale is low, then you end up saying, "Screw that." Kwame tried to reassure Heidi. He said that she is still in charge of the event and that Troy is her "co-pilot."
At the golf course, Bill said, "I'm always doing a hundred things at once. I like to operate at a fast pace." But the others in his group saw Bill as "frenzied" and "panicked." Lesley Rey, Director of Sales and Events at Trump National Golf Club, said that Bill went in and out of the clubhouse at least 150 times during the day. She also said that it doesn't look good for Bill, as the tournament director, to be running around like he was. In an interview, Amy said, "I, right now, don't think Bill will win - and it makes me very sad."
At the Jessica Simpson meet and greet, there was a problem, again caused by miscommunication. The number of people coming to the event had nearly doubled, but the hotel staff said they never got this information from Kwame's group. As a result, the ballroom for the meet and greet would never be able to accommodate the expected 150 people. Heidi called Kwame on the walkie-talkie and he came down to sort it out. Kwame said that they could just split the fans into smaller groups and only allow in one group at a time. This seemed to satisfy everyone. Kwame then had to track down Omarosa to get her to escort Jessica to the meet and greet, which was running late. In an interview, Kwame said his style is not to micromanage people. Instead, he gets talented people and assigns them tasks. Then he expects everyone to get their jobs done.
At Trump National Golf course, the golfers gathered after a day on the greens. Bill addressed the group and thanked everyone for their support of the Ike Austin Foundation, which focuses on the prevention of Diabetes. Donald thanked them all for raising a lot of money for a worthy cause. Donald then took off in his private helicopter for Atlantic City and Trump Taj Mahal.
Kwame met Donald on the Taj Mahal's helipad. Donald wanted to see Jessica before the concert, so Kwame took Donald down to the site of the meet and greet. Kwame radioed Troy at the meet and greet and told him to keep Jessica there because Donald was on his way. Troy told both Heidi and Omarosa. However, when Trump arrived at the ballroom, Jessica was gone - and no one knew where she was. Omarosa had left with Jessica without telling anyone. Kwame said that Jessica was at the stage. Donald was a good sport and went to the stage. They looked around, but no Jessica. That's because Omarosa and Jessica had gone back to Jessica's suite. Kwame tried in vain to get a hold of Omarosa, but she wasn't answering her walkie-talkie or her beeper. Donald was tired of running around, but he was even more tired of Kwame not knowing where Jessica was. In an interview, Kwame said, "This is the first time I thought I could be fired." Finally, they went to Jessica's suite, where Omarosa answered the door and greeted them with a big smile. In an interview, Kwame said, "Omarosa I would never hire because she's very intelligent, but she's a space cadet." At the concert, Donald introduced Jessica Simpson to a packed house. The audience, including Donald and Kwame, enjoyed the show.
Both Bill and Kwame thanked their groups and headed back in their limos to Trump Tower for their final day of the boardroom - and the final elimination. Kwame said, "I'm going to try to respectfully take Bill down. And he's going to try to do the same." Bill said, "It's going to be a battle down to the end." But when Bill and Kwame arrived just outside of the boardroom, they were asked to wait. Donald wanted to talk to the members of their groups first. So Amy, Nick, Katrina, Heidi, Troy and Omarosa headed into the boardroom. Donald asked for opinions. Heidi thought Kwame did a good job, but that he relied too much on Troy. Everyone who worked with Bill said he did a great job. Carolyn, who observed at the golf tournament, said Bill was exceptional. George, who observed at the concert, thought that Kwame was exceptional too. Donald asked about flaws. Amy, Nick and Katrina said that Bill's only problem was that he was frazzled at times. They said he needed to be calmer and not quite so on top of his people. Omarosa, Heidi and Troy said they had the opposite experience with Kwame, who they said needed to be more expressive and hands-on. Donald cut to the chase. Who would each of them hire? Not surprisingly, Amy, Nick and Katrina said Bill, while Heidi, Troy and Omarosa said Kwame. Donald joked that the group had been no help at all. The former candidates exited.
Bill and Kwame entered the boardroom. Donald first congratulated them. They were the final two out of over 215,000 candidates. Obviously they were each outstanding. But, Donald said, only one can get the job. Donald asked about Bill and Kwame's very different management styles. Donald said that Kwame's group wondered about his drive. Kwame said that he is just a calm, cool and collected person. Then, Kwame had to defend the fact that he chose Omarosa for his team - early in the draft. Carolyn said it was a risky choice and Kwame couldn't deny it. George brought up the issue that Kwame may not manage employees and situations closely enough. Carolyn told Bill that his group members thought he was too stressed at times. Bill disagreed and said that he's just intense. Donald asked Bill who the best choice would be. Bill said that he would be the best choice because of his experience, his "entrepreneurial blood," and his superior track record with tasks on the show. Kwame said he really wanted to work for Trump and said that he gave up a lot to try. Donald agreed and said that Kwame gave up so much, it scared him. Donald repeated that both men were outstanding and sent them out so he could confer with his advisors. George weighed in and said that Kwame was the best choice. He saw Kwame perform under fire and feels that Kwame is a better fit in the Trump organization. Carolyn said Bill was the best choice. She said that Kwame is too laid back while Bill is practical. She felt that Bill was a better fit. With his advisors split, the choice would be up to Donald. Donald asked his assistant to send the men back in.
Kwame and Bill got up and entered the boardroom. Donald said that the men were each winners, but that he could only choose one. Donald turned to Kwame and said that something was bothering him - big time. He said that Omarosa had lied to Kwame, twice. Donald wanted to know why Kwame didn't fire her. Donald sure would have. Kwame said he didn't know that was an option. Plus, he needed all three people in his group to complete his task. Donald turned to Bill and said that although Bill may have been a little nervous, he completed his task well. Then Donald spoke the words we've never heard from him before. He said, "Bill, you're hired!" In front of a live studio audience, Donald presented Bill with his first executive decision. For his job with the Trump organization, Bill could oversee the construction of a spectacular new building, Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, or he could manage an incredible golf course on the edge of the ocean, Trump National Golf Club - Los Angeles. Bill said both jobs were tempting, but that his heart is in Chicago, so he chose Trump International Hotel and Tower in the Windy City. The audience cheered. Trump gave Bill fifteen minutes of free time and then told him to get to work!

The date box arrives for Trish, which also contains a certificate for her to get her hair and make-up done by acclaimed hair stylist Cristophe, for what appears to be a date to the opera.
Back at the house the next morning, some of the girls are still upset with Trish's thong sunbathing, and the tensions only increase when Trish gets her private beauty session with Cristophe. After she's made-up, Trish manages to offend the house again when she tells them she think's she's fabulous. That night, Jesse arrives, dressed to the nines, to take Trish on their date.
First One-On-One Date: Dinner and Opera With: Trish Inside the Orpheum Theatre, the couple sits in their own box as they drink champagne and read the program for their private performance. While they sip champagne, Trish flirts very heavily with Jesse, telling him that she's a good kisser — she even admits that she wants to kiss him. After taking in the opera, the curtain drops, only to rise again almost immediately to reveal a dinner table set for two. The couple moves on-stage and sits down to dinner, where Trish admits she's thought about not having children, which catches Jesse off-guard. He tells her that having children is important to him; Trish replies that she's not the type to have four kids.
Trish's honesty has Jesse entranced, and he later describes Trish as "the real deal." After the date, in the limousine back to the house, Trish and Jesse share the first kiss of the series.
Excitement tears through the house when the next date box arrives, where they learn Mandy C., Amber, Anne-Catherine, Suzie, Jenny, Kristin, Jean Marie and Jesse are invited to an outdoor date. The Spy confesses she can't wait to get private time with Jesse, to tell him what she's seen and heard. In the hot tub, some of the girls recall Trish describing herself as a "gold-digging, money-grubbing whore," and other things Trish has said that makes it clear to them she's not the one for Jesse.
Second Group Date: Football and Dinner With: Amber, Jenny S., Kristi, Suzie, Jesse, Anne-Catherine, Mandy, and Jean Marie Jesse arrives the next day to pick up the girls for their park date, relieved that the Spy will be with him. They immediately break into two teams to play a friendly game of football, and then go into a beautiful house for dinner, where the girls get to ask Jesse questions. Kristin asks Jesse about a Q&A Jesse did where he stated he didn't want to be married until he was 30, and Jesse explains that things have changed drastically since he did that interview. Jesse explains that he's played the field and had a good time, but then puts his foot in his mouth when he tells the group that he didn't like waking up and seeing a stranger there beside him — and that what seemed like a good idea the night before, in fact, wasn't. Jesse's answer rubs Kristin the wrong way, who later confesses that anyone who would do that is not the type of man she's looking for.
Jesse then takes some private time with the spy, to ask her for her guidance. Once they are alone, the spy is revealed to be Jenny S., and Jesse takes the opportunity to talk with her about the girls. When Jesse tells Jenny that he had an amazing time with Trish, Jenny tells him she thinks Trish is extremely high-maintanence, and talks constantly about money. Jenny tells Jesse that the woman she likes best for him so far is Tara.
The Rose Ceremony
The ladies arrive on a rainy night for the next rose ceremony, and during the party, Tara opens up to Jenny about how uncomfortable she is talking with Jesse. After getting some good advice from Jenny, Tara takes Jesse aside for a face-to-face conversation, and asks him about the "waking up to a stranger" comment. Jesse tells Tara that he's not like that anymore, and he wants to find someone to be with and fall in love with. Jesse was caught off-guard by Tara's questions. Tara comes away feeling comfortable that Jesse is here for the right reasons.
Jesse then steps aside with Trish — and Jenny. Jenny notices that Trish is not the same with Jesse as she is with the other girls. Jesse then meets Kristin in a private room, where she tells him that she knows in her heart that he is not the one for her. She goes on to tell him that it wouldn't be fair to herself, him or the other girls who want to get to know him better. Jesse tells her he's glad she spoke up, because he wanted to give her a rose. Jesse confesses that he's upset and disappointed with her decision.
Chris collects Jesse, and they head to the Deliberation Room. Jesse then returns, ready for the Rose Ceremony. Jesse tells the girls that he's tried to open himself up to them, so they can see who he really is. He then offers roses to Katie (who asks "As in me?"), Tara, Jessica B., Trish, Mandy J., Jenny S., Karen, Suzie, Jesse, and Julie.
Next Episode Coming up Next: Wednesday, April 21 Jesse and the women take compatibility tests to determine who will go on one-on-one dates, a two-on-one date, and a six-on-one date. Back at the Ladies' Villa, the women play a very revealing game of "I Never," and the spy, Jenny S., tells Jesse her thoughts on the women…not all of them kind. Then, Jesse must narrow the field from ten women to six.
American Idol Recap: After a bunch of hullabaloo on Monday, the American Idol Singing Spectacular Show was moved to Wednesday. And this after I made sure to return on Monday from my long weekend in Prague. They were singing in the streets of Prague on Saturday, friends! With Tuesday now being American Idle night, I spent my free time writing the intro to tonight's article. That extra time allowed me to come up with that amazing Idol/Idle bit, a joke that I'm definitely the first person to ever make.
The biggest question we face right now is, with the singing show coming on Wednesday and the resulting show coming on Thursday, what will Seacrest be wearing? Usually he goes for a dark suit Tuesday and a light suit Wednesday. Now, does he go light because that's for results or because it's for Wednesday? Maybe he'll wear a dark jacket with light pants tonight. But what does that leave for Thursday? I really can't wait to find out when the show starts. And…we have…Seacrest! In! It's light! In fact, with a pink shirt, it's really light. That handles the first part of our question. Tune in tomorrow to see what Seacrest wears next! Oh, and the results of Idol.
Moving on, Ryan tells us that he'll be our date for the next hour (Oh, you!) and that he's taking us to the movies. I have an ample supply of Hot Tamales and grape Mike n' Ike's, so I should be all set. Introducing the judges, Ryan tells us that Simon is wearing William Shatner's corset. Perhaps that's why Kirk's delivery was always so stilted. "This…thing…tied so…tight!" Ryan goes on to describe Randy's favorite film as "Old Yeller 2: The Revenge" and his favorite actress as Ellen Barkin. Oh, I get it. Dog jokes. How very droll.
Speaking of the movies, here's special guest judge Quentin Tarantino? So…should we expect some gun play? Maybe some in-depth conversation amongst the judges about pop culture minutia?
I wonder if somebody will sing Dick Dale's "Misirlou" in tribute to Quentin tonight. "Bum bum bah! Bum bah bah bah! Bum bah bah! Bum bah bah bah! Bwearrrrrrrrrrrrn! Dairn dairn dairn dairn der der dairn dairnnnnnnn!" Or maybe JPL can just come out and say "Whose chopper is this?" "Zed's." "Who's Zed?" "Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead." and just walk off. That would be dyn-o-mite. Wait, that's a TV reference. Dag.
We got the lights, we got the cameras, now we need some action. Wheeee! First up tonight is George Huff, who loves "The Wiz." Did you know that "The Wiz" inspired George to try out for Idol? Somebody at People Magazine furiously scribbles that tidbit down for future use. George, wearing a shirt that I haven't seen since at least 1989, won't be doing the Huff Bounce tonight. No, this song is too serious. You know, I have to admit I've never seen "Against All Odds," but if this song is any indication of the film, I'm not missing much. You know, when George doesn't bounce, he, uh…basically just stands still. If you had the sound off, it would look like George is simply giving a dramatic speech. Always good to have a backup move, you know? Judges? Well, the judges didn't like it. And the audience doesn't like them. Boooooooo! Somewhere, Peter Gabriel is smiling because a Phil Collins song looked bad. Soo-soo-sseudio!
We're back and Seacrest is into the audience early tonight. Well, just to the judges table so far. He needs to test the water first. Now "ready for her closeup" (Puns aplenty!) is Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer's favorite movie is "Sister Act 2," which is something that even Whoopi Goldberg wouldn't say. Of course, she won't be singing a song from either "Sister Act." She's doing Whitney tonight. She has nothing! Nothing! If she doesn't have us. Now this, Randy liked. Paula falls into line with that. Quentin, enthusiastic even for a guy wearing puka shells, raves about it.
JPL is up third. One of his favorite movies is "Dead Poets Society." I once had a friend tell me that "Dead Poets Society" changed his life. I watched the movie and subsequently stopped talking to him. My pals can't be soft! JPL will be jailhouse rocking tonight. JPL doesn't let his Members Only jacket hold him back. Although I couldn't tell if his dancing was any good because the lights blinded me. It was like The White Stripes at The Grammys. Hey! Wait a minute! They're calling him JPL! Should I expect royalty checks for that? Randy, Paula and Quentin loved the frenetic movement and the spastic pointing and the little black dots they see on their eyes right now. But Simon says man, I don't know what's going on.
Now we have Diana DeGarmo, whose favorite movie is "Bowfinger." You know that big blue building Steve Martin visits toward the end? I live near that. If you don't remember, it's probably because your brain purged all recollection of that terrible movie. Seriously, "Bowfinger"? You'd think with the way she did her hair tonight, Diana would've picked "Glitter." Or…almost anything else, including a few Hungarian films. Hey, everybody loves Celine Dion, right? We could all go for hearing this song again, right? It's been a few years, right? Well, either way, here it is. My heart will go on! My song will be loud! Onnnnnnnnn! And loooooouuuuud! The judges give Diana credit for trying to sing Celine, which I think is actually roundabout criticism. Quentin really didn't care about it. I'm a Hollywood hotshot! Don't waste my time! Simon tells Diana that she's two years too old and three years too young.
Fantasia is up next. And she's taking us back to the '20s and '30s with her dress, hair and song. People seem to be reminiscing about Herbert Hoover lately, so this could be apropos. Fantasia's going to sit for this performance. Not on the standard barstool, but on the floor. This is a new one. And I like it! From here on out, this move will be called The Fantasia. Fantasia finishes her sit and the audience stands up. Although getting a standing ovation at Idol lately is about as tough as getting one during the State of the Union address. Randy proclaims it to be the best performance on Idol ever. Quentin tells her to get funky like Pam Grier. Simon calls it magical. Fantasia, now blubbering, hugs Seacrest, who shifts left to protect his pink shirt.
Jasmine's favorite movie is "Lilo and Stitch," perhaps one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. Aw, c'mon, Jasmine! That pick is so stereotypical! I mean, what about "The Big Bounce" or "50 First Dates"? Or even "Blue Hawaii"? What about "Magnum PI: The Movie"? Those went down in Hawaii, too. Jasmine! Oh, wait. The Magnum Movie only happened in my imagination. And it was a blockbuster! The judges weren't so crazy about it and Simon says Idol isn't American Juniors. Frankly, if you ask me, nothing can ever be American Juniors again. Please.
Back from a break and Ryan is again trolling the audience. Hey, here's Mr. Ear Delicious himself, Neil Sedaka! Neil, how does it feel to have one of your songs #1 again? In case you're wondering, it feels good. John Stevens is up next. His favorite movie is "Aladdin," so naturally he'll be performing a song from "Casablanca" tonight. And I must say, I am shocked - shocked! - that John will be crooning an old tune tonight. Now if you'll bear with us, the busboy will refill your water immediately following his performance. I mean, that suit is white, baby! "A kiss is just a kiss. This is just John Stevens' best chance. He'd better not bloooooow…it." John sways and snaps his fingers, as he's wont to do. The song comes to a classy close and Simon accuses John of having no charisma. John's reaction? Eh. Okay. Maybe one night Conan O'Brien should fill in for John. I'm sure nobody would even notice. "Man, John is so funny all of a sudden! What happened?"
Right before we finish, Ryan gives Quentin a chance to plug "Kill Bill: Volume 2," in theaters this Friday. Umm…I'm not sure how much crossover the Idol and Kill Bill audiences have. One features blood, guts, misery and revenge. And the other is a movie. Ha ha! Oh, I did it again! Didn't see that one coming at all, did you? La Toya's favorite film is Find ing Ne Mo. Hey! Fantasia already called that one! La Toya is wearing chain mail tonight. This medieval, protective look has proven quite popular this year. Maybe the kids feel vulnerable on stage. La Toya is performing a number from "West Side Story" tonight, although it's not "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" which is the only number I know from that movie. And frankly, I don't know if that song is even from "West Side Story." In fact, there's a lot I don't know. Like basic Roman numerals. Although I do know that La Toya has a pretty big voice tonight. Geez. Randy tells La Toya she was great and she just nods. Yes, I know. It was great. We all know.
As we're closing things out, we see a sign in the audience that asks "got idol?" That's it? That's the best you could do with a big piece of cardboard and a full marker? Two lousy words? No glitter or pictures or elbow macaroni or anything? Get out of my audience! Well, that's about it for today. We saw a bunch of songs, chatted about them, went "whoooo!" a whole bunch. Still, it feels like I'm forgetting something. Something…that completes my night. And life. Something…I need. What could it be? Ah, yes. Seacrest! Out!
